Javier Ruiz, an academic from the Department of Geophysics of the University of Chile, leads this line of work in the INSUD and in the following paragraphs he explains the work that will be done.
«In this line we will focus on understanding and analyzing the entire subduction process of the Nazca Plate under the South American Plate. That is, the complete process since the Nazca Plate penetrates below the South American and generates seismicity. We will work from a macro point of view, a global or geodynamic vision of this process»
In addition, Ruiz added that all types of seismicity that can be generated in subduction zones will be analyzed. «This includes seismicity caused by the very process of relative sliding between the tectonic plates, as well as other types of earthquakes that could occur inside the plates.»
What are the study areas?
The north and south of Chile will be the research areas of this line, Ruiz said. During this first year of work of the INSUD, the focus is placed in the northern area of Chile, between Arica and Antofagasta and the areas surrounding the volcanic complex Lazufre and Lascar volcano.
«For the north of Chile, we have a significant amount of seismological data. On the one hand we have the records of the IPOC seismological network http://www.ipoc-network.org/welcome-to-ipoc/, whose network is deployed between Arica and Antofagasta and also the CSN (National Seismological Center) http: / /www.sismologia.cl/ has installed new stations in the area that complement the data provided by the IPOC network. One of the great advantages of the IPOC network is that it is operating continuously, «said Ruiz.
The academic added that in a second period they will focus on the area of Valdivia and Chiloé for which the data of the great Valdivia earthquake of 1960 and Chiloé of 2016 will be analyzed.
Research instruments and methodologies
Professor Ruiz explained that they will use recent analysis technologies and methodologies and it is expected to advance in the development of new methods of analysis. Regarding the incorporation of different measurement instruments, Ruiz added that depending on the study area, a temporary network can be installed on land such as broadband instruments (seismometers and accelerometers) or short period instruments
How does this line of work dialogue with the others presented by the INSUD?
Javier Ruiz explained that the line of seismicity will work in conjunction with the other lines of work of the project, through specific studies associated with how the subduction process that triggers seismicity is related to the volcanism that is present in Chile, for example.
“The idea is to analyze the seismicity that occurs in the Chilean subduction zone and to have a macro view of the relationship with other lines of the INSUD. We will use modern methods to analyze and modelling the processes from the Geophysics ”

“In the seismic line we are going to incorporate postgraduate students, both from the Master of Science in Geophysics, as well as the Doctorate in Geology (From the Department of Geology of the University). We also hope to add postdoctoral researcherers to our team, ”said Ruiz
What are the international centers with which you are going to work?
Javier Ruiz commented that collaboration with researchers from the Institute of Physique du Globe in Paris is already committed; as well as from the University of Grenoble and the Institut de Physique du Globe de Strasbourg.
